REX – broken

REX

Melbourne’s rising experimental-pop force REX returns with ‘broken’ via APOLLO Distribution, a new single that erupts with alternative, dark-pop and electronic energy. The track is a visceral, genre-defying moment, that blends haunting, industrial tension, sharp pop sensibilities, and a raw emotional core that cements REX as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging voices.

‘broken’ delves into the darker corners of youth culture and the shifting pressures that shape young men today.

“I wrote this song after watching the Netflix series Adolescence; which highlights the “red pilling” of young men in our society.” REX explains. “I wrote “broken” from the perspective of a desperate mother, sister, teacher etc who feels the need to place responsibility on someone for the behaviour of a young man in their life. I’ve added some metal elements to the production of this song not only to convey the intensity of the emotion attached to the lyrics, but to manoeuvre REX away from clean classic pop, into a darker and grungier, mixed- genre pop.”

The result is a track that sits confidently in its own space – neither fully pop nor fully metal, but a shadowy hybrid that mirrors the uneasy themes at its core.

Carving her own lane within the Australian music landscape, REX continues to refine a bold visual and sonic identity that feels uniquely hers. Her growth has been marked by a run of standout releases throughout the year, with tracks like ‘fair play’ and ‘hollow’, earning attention for their inventive production and arresting honesty.

With ‘broken’, REX closes out the year with the same explosive energy that has defined her year, and solidifies herself as an artist unafraid to push boundaries while speaking to the complexities of youth, identity, and modern culture.
