Devon Thompson – Hunger

Alternative indie artist Devon Thompson unveils her spellbinding new single and music video, “Hunger,” a shimmering dream-world creation born from loneliness, longing, and the ache of modern city life and recorded at the legendary Teatro in Oxnard, CA, home to iconic sessions from Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Emmylou Harris. “Hunger” marks Thompson’s most intimate and sonically lush release yet.
Blending bright, airy tones inspired by The Smiths and The Sundays with an undercurrent of emotional unrest, “Hunger” explores the painful irony of feeling most alone when surrounded by people.
“The concept was born after spending a night with people who make you feel even more alone than when you’re by yourself,” Thompson explains. “Caught in this despair, there was something so alluring to me about making the song sound so saccharine and sweet, but having such a melancholic meaning behind it. It was written very fast, while I was wishing I was anywhere else, somewhere happy and warm. But the reality is, sometimes people feel more alone in a city full of strangers.”
Produced by James Salter (The Ravonettes, B-52s, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Junior Senior) who spent many years at Southern Tracks and worked out of Muscle Shoals as both a musician and an engineer, bringing the lush southern textures of the East Coast and combining them with the atmospheric dream of California’s West Coast, inside the famously haunted Teatro, the track glimmers with sparkle-laden textures, metallic guitars, and a delicate atmosphere that Thompson describes as otherworldly.
“The building is old and practically haunted, I’m pretty sure the spirits helped us write this song,” she adds. “With sparkle sounds here and there and those shimmering guitars, it’s my favorite song yet.
The music video for “Hunger” brings Thompson’s inner dream world to life, an antique-filled, glitter-kissed fantasy realm contrasted starkly with the cold isolation of the outside city.
“Making the video for ‘Hunger’ allowed my dreams of making my fairy dream world come true,” Thompson says. “Lots of antiques, glitter, and sparkling lights later, my ethereal fantasy was born. It highlights the extreme juxtaposition between living in my safe fantasy space and the cold reality of the loneliness one can feel living in a big city alone. Everyone has a safe place they go to, that they dream about, but the world outside of that can be harsh and cruel.”
“Hunger” arrives on the heels of Thompson’s breakout single “Wishing,” which sparked a wave of alternative and whimsical content creators on social media.
