Tulle – Devour/The Performer

A mesmerising blend of alternative sensibilities and pop-drawn soundscapes, Oslo-based artist TULLE is back with another apocalyptic-pop single, ‘Devour / The Performer’, drawn straight from the circus.
Following a busy year, the release comes off the back of ‘The Axe And The Tree’ earlier in the year.
Starting with TULLE’s silk-like vocals and heart-drawn melodies, ‘Devour / The Performer’ offers an alternative, noir-tinged backbone in which to build its entrancing world of swelling synthesisers and expansive pop-soaked melodies. Punctuated by keyboard stabs, the single balances itself between an exploration of expectation and falling flat, and a solemn reminder that all is never as it seems. Clocking in at a touch over four minutes, ‘Devour / The Performer’ cuts through as a track of two halves, revealing the intimate, raw influences that make the single so poignant.
Commenting on the single, she explains, “This is a really special song to me because it’s sort of a ‘two-in-one’ release. The outro, ‘The Performer’, was a song that I wrote many months before we wrote ‘Devour’. I wanted it to feel like a sad clown in the dressing room at the back of a circus, all alone. I took it to my producer, Truls, and told him I wanted it at the end of a really big song. That’s when we wrote ‘Devour’. My whole project is about performing and putting on a mask, and that’s what the song means to me: to constantly be trying your best, wanting people to notice, and kind of always falling flat. Slowly going a little bit mad over it.”
Born with a morbid curiosity, artist and singer-songwriter TULLE writes with a deep infatuation with human purpose and what happens in the next life. Inspired by folklore, horror, and the gripping pull of religion, she released her first single in 2022 and has since gone on to release a string of eerie, mystical alt-pop tracks. Receiving backing from the likes of Spotify’s New Music Friday and NRK P3, her artistry is built upon a distinctive foundation, looking at life from the perspective of a circus clown, constantly performing, though never understood. Your silly little clown loves you.
