Anna May – Atom Bomb

Anna May

Folk artist Anna May releases her newest single, “Atom Bomb” ,recorded by Steve Rizzo at Stable Sound Studios.

Anna May on “Atom Bomb:

“I wrote Atom Bomb a year ago in early September of 2024, in what seems like miraculous foreshadowing, now, as I look at how accurate these lyrics are in the context of the global perspective in this moment.

I wrote a song about a break up that had not yet happened, only to find later that there were eerie connections that tied this individual to the title of the song that I written before even meeting him, as shown by the timestamps on the email of lyrics that I sent to myself after writing it, despite the song basically being about him.

It is uncanny and can only be described as a freakish coincidence. I hate to call anything prophetic, but it does truly feel this way when I take inventory of all the details around this song’s inception, and parallels to the timeline of my personal life. I almost don’t even feel that I can take credit for it, because there are moments in the writing of songs when some truly cosmic force takes over for sure.

I wrote this before the outcome of the November 2024 election, perhaps exploring in my own vague ideas, what might come from a Trump presidency. My vision was atom bombs raining down day and night, and wondering if we will survive.

While it is hyperbolic, a year later, such realities do not feel as distant as they before did, again, in eerie foreshadowing.

The song is simultaneously about two things and can be interpreted either way : a meditation on a dying relationship, or the depiction of a new and scary world order. Atom Bomb, for me, is proof that sometimes we truly do not know where songs come from. As someone who grew up on the coast of New England, near aquariums and seaports, I feel that the song captures those destinations in many ways.

The song itself has the muted energy of a sea shanty, encompassed by a rigid – melancholic – folk soliloquy.

It has Titanic – esque moments, holding everything of the ill fated & macabre.

I was influenced by some of the most traditional, elemental folk music in writing Atom Bomb, and then songs like Working Class Hero by John Lennon and the illustrious work of one of my favorite bands, Devotchka. “
