Wolf Alice brought the savage and the dancer to Denver. In a set that included everything from mosh pits to a disco ball this English rock band was different from anything before. Wolf Alice is Ellie Rowsell, Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis and Joel Amey. The band is touring on their 4th studio album, The Clearing. The Clearing is a disco infused album propelled by Rowell’s soaring vocals.

The Clearing

Wolf Alice’s show worked to include everything. The first 3 songs “Thorns”, “How Can I Make It Ok?”, and “Delicious Things” marked the calmest part of the set. Bassist Theo Ellis acted as assistant ringmaster interjecting tidbits about the band and the songs while Rowsell metamorphized into different stars. Early on he commented that the band had been coming to Denver for 10 years and remembered being introduced to Fireball (whiskey) here. The band took a break for an acoustic song of “Safe From Heartbreak (If You Never Fall In Love)” Rowell mentioned the “sing songy part of the set” that began over halfway through with “The Sofa”, a song off The Clearing. A few songs later the set changed again into a full on rock show with their older hits including “Smile.” Before the night was over Wolf Alice’s lightshow included the disco ball to Rowell in a star. The band didn’t need many effects only their music to drive the crowd wild leading to the finale of their greatest hit, “Don’t Delete The Kisses.”

Folk troubadour Willy Mason opened the set. Mason never introduced himself and only at the end of the set did he introduce the band. He powered through a set which was veiled politics mentioning “No Kings” and “Truth Is Life.” If he’d had more introductions he might have connected to the audience more

Wolf Alice finishes the US leg of the tour this weekend before they begin a run in Europe. Expect to be taken on a journey with the set that mingles the best of 70’s disco with driving punk and eternal rock.
